Monster Hunter World: The Wildspire Waste

A looong time ago I worked as a concept artist on Monster Hunter World! With the new Wilds out and being again such a fantastic game I decided to start posting some of my work back then. It was a blast to work on this game, the team was (and is!) amazing and I learned so much about art and game development at Capcom, things I still apply in my work today.

Most images are very sketchy, the pacing was quite high and I had to sometimes finish around 4 sketches per day. Most of the images and tons more of them can be found in the amazing "Monster Hunter World: Official Complete Works" book!

The Wildspire Waste was a very interesting stage to work on because of its variety in landscapes. We based all of the vegetation on the soil type, which was in turn based on the waterflow on the map.

One of my favorite landscapes here is the field of purple flowers. It was based on the landscapes I grew up in as a kid, in the Netherlands we have huge fields of these purple plants that bloom in summer. They happen to grow on very acid soil, which was the type we selected for this area, so it all fitted together.

The Wildspire Waste has many different biomes combined into one, but all of them are based on the soil types and vegetation you would find.
